Program Note
Tomb is a jazz chart that, like Jiya Learns to Dance, is also inspired by South Indiana classical music. The piece is built on a series of progressively expanding rhythmic cycles, and a distinctive feature of the rhythmic language is an empty beat that occurs half way through each cycle. The piece starts and ends with the head and features extended solo improvisation sections for each player that move through a series of dramatic tempo and texture shifts. Tomb was written for Triplepoint Trio during a residency at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute in 2017.
