Program Note
Push for Tuba and Piano is a pair of studies in forward momentum. The beginning of the first movement "Yearning" finds both players harmonically and rhythmically adrift, floating in a void as they search in the dark for resolution. After an intense moment of convergence, the piano accepts its place in the void as the Tuba continues to search for clarity. The second movement "Resolution" embodies a different type of forward momentum: one of resilience and certitude. The piano provides a motor-like rhythmic drive over which the Tuba rises, soars, and plunges towards a tumultuous conclusion.
