Program Note
Pocket Concerto is a five-minute showpiece for Sinfonietta. The word "concerto" is used in a similar sense to Bartok's seminal Concerto for Orchestra in that various sections and groupings of instruments are featured in a soloistic and virtuosic manner over the course of the work. The piece begins in clear sections that highlight different groupings of instruments in alternation and proceeds to blur and evolve the melodic and harmonic roles assigned to each group over the course of the work. The piece is called a "pocket" concerto not only because of its smaller duration, scope, and instrumentation in comparison to a Concerto for Orchestra, but also because I imagine the work being very much "in the pocket" musically, tethered to a driving and relentless rhythmic pulse that underlies much of the piece.
